Hydrow was founded in 2017 by Bruce Smith, a US national rowing team coach and Charles River regatta winner. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the main product is a household intelligent water resistance rowing machine. In 2019, the company raised $25 million from 2019 investors including LVMH’s PRIVATE equity firm L Catterton and Rx3 Ventures. Raised another $200 million and is in discussions with shell company Sandbridge X2 to take SPAC public, which would value the combined company at more than $1 billion.
Hydrow,priced at $2,295, Hydrow offers on-demand fitness classes, including Pilates, yoga and rowing instruction ($29 a month or $290 a year). Hydrow is an 86-inch long x 25-inch wide rowing machine with an easy-to-use 22-inch HD touch screen on the front. The display is sweatproof, comes with Hi-Fi speakers, a 2-megapixel camera, a built-in microphone, USB 2.0 connectivity, and both Bluetooth and WiFi capabilities. The company’s sales grew more than 500 percent in 2020, and by June 2021, sales were up 300% from the same period in 2020.
At $2,199, Hydrow is one of the most expensive smart rowing machines on the market. Hydrow also offers a $62 monthly installment option for 36 months. The company offers a 30-day trial period, so if you’re not satisfied with the machine, you can get a full refund, with no return shipping charges. It comes with a five-year structural frame warranty, a one-year component warranty (including handles, straps, seat components, screen hinges, screens and other electronics) and a one-year artificial warranty.
Hydrow’s home screen has eight options, “Library, Dynamics, Racing, Progress, Personal Info, Help and Settings.” The home screen offers recommended workouts, and you can scroll down through various workout plans, upcoming live lines, featured and hot lines, tutorial videos, and athlete screening workouts. The company offers two lines of live streaming a day from Tuesday through Saturday. If you can’t find live workouts that fit your schedule, plenty of pre-recorded workouts are available on demand.
Hydrow films his rowing training on both waterways depending on the time of year. Filming took place on the Charles River in Boston in the summer and Indian River in Miami Beach, Florida in the winter. In the “Journeys” section, there will be training videos filmed in the waters of California, Florida, London, Massachusetts, New York, Scotland, Texas and Vermont.
Hydrow has a special campaign where, after 60 days of using Hydrow, the company will make a donation to Water.org (a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide safe water and sanitation around the world).
